2018 NEW YEAR’S CARDS FROM AROUND THE JAPANESE GAMING INDUSTRY

26 January 2018

Happy (belated) New Year! We’ve been distracted by snow and Monster Hunter hype, which is our excuse for why this is coming a few weeks later than usual, but as always, we’re back with another installment of our yearly tribute to the best “nengajōs” (New Year’s cards) from around the Japanese gaming industry! If you’re a nengajō newb, we forgive you; point your clicking devices and/or fingers here for a peek at some previous entries before diving into the latest batch of game industry goodness: 20112012201320142015, 2016, 2017

This year — the year of the dog — we once again teamed up with the amazing Temmie Chang to make our card. In 2017, we dabbled in game dev for the first time here at 8-4 Towers, producing PS4 and Vita versions of UNDERTALE, complete with a new area called the Dog Shrine. For the Japanese physical release of the game, we worked with our friends at Fangamer to create a Japan-exclusive set of “Inu mikuji” (Dorito it) bookmarks featuring artwork of the shrine, and our nengajō this year is an expanded version of that piece, showcasing the full shrine in winter, with the traditional “Happy New Year” greeting written in snow on the roof:

As always, we’ve put together a collection of some of the other cool cards from around the Japanese industry for you to peruse, so have a look below (click through for larger versions!), and let us and/or the creators know what you think! And once again: HAPPY NEW YEAR!
