8-4 Play 3/23/2012: SICK R US

With Gaming Jesus bedridden from an evil GDC pox and both JJ and Hiroko fighting off the flu, we thought about taking the week off. But then, like an angel from Heaven above, our intern showed up at the door with three pre-release copies of Kid Icarus: Uprising, and all the pain and suffering went away. Listen to a half hour’s worth of spoiler-free discussion on the 3DS’s first major release of 2012, along with follow-up thoughts on Journey (also spoiler-free!), quick impressions of PixelJunk 4AM and Lollipop Chainsaw, some scattershot news and GDC thoughts, and more talk from Hiroko than you’ve heard in the last 10 episodes combined.

  1. Regardless of the system used to critic art the ending of Mass Effect 3 fails to hold up. Plot holes, thematic inconsistencies, a lack of closure, little in the way of player choice (a halmark of the series) are just a few of the problems. The biggest issue as I see it is the fact that BioWare outright lied in interviews regarding the ending. You can read some of their quotes here:

    http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/355/index/10056886

Of course none of this matters if you don’t play or care about Mass Effect. In which case why are commenting at all? Does complaining about people complaining on the internet make you feel cooler than others or something?

Also, it is well within BioWare’s rights to refuse to change the ending. However, it is right of consumers to refuse to buy anymore of BioWare’s products until their demands are met. The art defense really only works if whatever your offering is free.

  2. a comment, which says:

You guys shouldn’t feel compelled to do a podcast, if the core members of the team (Mark, in particular) aren’t present, OR if you have other work to do, and can’t afford to podcast for more than 2 hours. Afterall, this is a bi-monthly podcast; we can afford to wait.

  3. JiggleBiscuits says:

Getting *really* fucking tired of people with voices in the industry shitting all over the audience just because they’re dissatisfied with a product.

Mark needs to come back and fire your pathetic fucking asses.

It’ll be another podcast dropped for me until your hostile, anti-consumer asses are gone.

  4. Isaacthegamer says:

I bought Journey on your recommendation last week. My companion stayed with me the whole game and we worked as a team. It made the ending that much better. My friend’s first companion tried to do everything before he could and wouldn’t leave him alone. He quit after 30 min. I think the online can definitely enhance the experience but I would be sad if I had my friend’s experience.

  5. GroizerX says:

Hey guys, love the podcast, but very stupid way to talk about Mass Effect 3 fan reaction. Even Hiroko :/

  6. ravi says:

i love you guys, you guys are tied with the bombcast for the best podcast, regardless if gaming jesus is on the show or not.

but please when your talking about news, please be more knowledgeable about a product and not so fucking ignorant and one-sided,

that mass effect ending was the worst ending ive seen in a videogame, it is the clear cut representative of laziness, seriously go look at the 3 endings on youtube, VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE between the 3 endings,

and we the consumers supposed to leave that and let it be?, when we have put over 5 years of character investment and moral choices, and 30 hours in mass effect 3 assembling a war fleet for the final battle, uniting galaxies and wrapping up stories to just have it all thrown aside at the end? and we’re supposed to just let that happen?

(everything youve been fighting for for the past 3 games, everything youve been doing for the past 3 games, just seriously gets thrown aside, but apparently this is totally fine right? give me a fucking break)

i wont get into spoilers and details, but the best ending in the game, implies that, bioware was going to do this ending dlc regardless of the fan outcry.

and this is supposed to be alright? and they shouldnt be damned for this at all,

god you game industry people (journalism and gamedevelopment) just have the biggest egos sometimes,

i bet if this shit was pulled on a beloved Japanese trilogy of games that you guys have put hundreds of hours into, you would be complaining as well,

and i have to agree with this statement the user made up on the front

“Of course none of this matters if you don’t play or care about Mass Effect. In which case why are commenting at all? Does complaining about people complaining on the internet make you feel cooler than others or something?”

“Also, it is well within BioWare’s rights to refuse to change the ending. However, it is right of consumers to refuse to buy anymore of BioWare’s products until their demands are met. The art defense really only works if whatever your offering is free.”

cmon, i expected you guys to be more open minded, even the bombcast crew, patrick and jeff and vinny, were all booing bioware for doing this, have now come around and are more open minded about the whole thing and see the fans perspective on why we’re pissed.

please, if this is the sort of shit you have to say, then please just dont do a podcast, and come back when your more open minded.

  7. John says:

Can anyone out there answer my question? I’ve been trying to get this noticed but so far I’ve failed.

I really need to know this so could you at least have a look?

I want to know wich other localization companies do you guys know/work with? I’d love to get a few names, as I have tons of different questions for them as well.

If anyone knows any, I’d be thankful if you could share that information with me :)

    Thank you!

EDIT: I’ve tried finding companies on the internet but so far I’ve found nothing, so this website is pretty much the only possible place I can get some answers.

  8. Groizer x says:

Hey guys, love the show but the mass effect discussion was made in a very disrespectful way.

  9. Ryan D. says:

    Hey guys!

It was great to hear all your thoughts on Kid Icarus! And I also wanted to say that the controls actually hurt your hands a lot less if you turn the reticule speed really high in the control options, since you’re not moving the stylus around from side to side nearly as much. Also, it gives the game more of that Quake/Unreal/PC twitchyness that you seem to be into. :D …so yeah, try it!

I hope Mark gets well soon and I’m looking forward to hearing him back on the podcast! Later!

  10. YourBoy says:

Hey guys love the podcast. A new Transformers Fall of Cybertron trailer was released and I was curious if Japanese gamers or even Japan in general like Transformers (the movie/cartoons/upcoming game).

  11. Wizpig says:

    Disrespectful?

What about “deal with it” is so terrible? some people would make a better impression saying things like “Mass Effect is dead to me!” than “Change that ending!!”.

So yeah, deal with it, blame EA, blame EAware, blame money and rushed games; stop buying Bioware games if you think they are dead, don’t waste your time asking for a “bawww new ending plz”.

    It’s their vision.
    And their vision sucked.
And you are NOTHING that will matter to them enough to change that vision.

  12. Martin Penwald says:

Been listening since the first episode, and I really like the podcast, but that Mass Effect discussion was the absolute low-point so far.

First of all, why do people who have not experienced the trilogy all the way to its hilariously terrible end tell the people who have experienced it how wrong their opinions are? What’s the point of that?

And “it’s not your place to say what it should or should not have been” (quoting verbatim here)? Are you kidding me? Since when is criticism of a (commercial) product forbidden? Why do you talk about what you didn’t like when talking about a game? Why don’t you just “move on and deal with it” if you don’t like something?

And finally, about the deep Mass Effect universe and upcoming games set in it: why would the people who were bitterly disappointed by how Bioware handled ME3 show interest in further games? I don’t think that something you dislike is gonna make you want more of it…

  13. ShinnFlowen says:

Just finished listening to a bunch of 8-4 podcasts after finishing exams and I have to say that this episode was great, but the discussion of Mass Effect 3 was pretty terrible. As a stand alone game the ending is okay, but as an ending for a trilogy that was based on making decisions which they stated it would make a difference it was a terrible ending. The better business bureau stated EA/Bioware were false advertising the fact your choices affect your ending and even a fan predicted this terrible ending two years ago on their very own forums.
You can’t review a game without beating it or scuff someone’s opinion while not having valid reasons that support how the ending integrates with the trilogy/game.

  14. Dennis says:

Wanted to get back into this podcast but the Mass Effect 3 talk was so baseless and asinine.
