Hello folks from 8-4! I have been trying to contact you, in order to get some questions answered, if possible. I hope this does not seem as an insisting request, but here it goes. My name is John, and since I was a child, I have always been interested in gaming. During these last years, my passion for the industry and how everything is made, has grown significantly. And one of my goals is to someday live in Japan , and of course, work in japanese game development. One of the possibilities I had always considered was game localization. Except I have only found out big chunks of information about it recently. The first company that I saw that worked on that exact aspect was yours. However, I still have quite a few questions regarding the “skills” that are necessary to work in the Localization field. And I Would love to ask two important questions to the people ( Americans ) that work at 8-4. Question number 1: Besides translating/organizing documents with game information, etc. Do you also work with the game’s code? And if so, is it necessary to have any programming knowledge? Question number 2: What degree did you get in order to be a part of 8-4? Any specific degree that would be more suitable for the “skills” that are required from an employee working at a game localization company?
Thank You!
-John
Please Ignore my comment above.
Well, i just listened to your newest podcast, and i’m very thankful for the time you took to answer my questions, along with other listener’s feedback ^^ I now have a more general idea of what to do, and things to work on. Thank you so much for clearing these things out for me. I’l continue to listen to your podcasts from now on. Hopefully in a couple of years we might meet ;) Have a great day everyone!

Hey 8-4 crew!
FFXIV 2.0 information released today is essentially an extension of what us FFXIV players have known was coming all along. In fact even the world redesign stuff was given to us a few weeks back during a livestream from the producer.
You are right that the level of disclosure is unprecedented for a Japanese company. As a FFXI veteran and someone who has weathered the storm of FFXIV, the biggest change is the new producer and his attitude towards his players. He gets that mmo development needs to be transparent, and we love him for that.
What’s news to me personally is the new engine/update. The crystal tools engine at least what it is in FFXIV currently is bloody awful, poorly optimized even for someone who regularly updates his computer once a year for pc gaming.
2) The announcement of subscription fees commencing this year. Terrible decision, in my opinion, while I have recently enjoyed the updates getting the game back up to par in the fundamentals. The game is just that basic, the next few foreseeable patches address the fundamentals of the game, and to me it feels like this is another case of Wada strikes again. I do not know if I feel comfortable with paying a $15 subscription for this game prior to 2.0, or at least not for the next few months as planned.
Alright, tons of new questions for the wonder group! (sounds like a suitable nickname ;)) Hope these aren’t too personal. Let’s get started!
So when did you all start learning japanese? Were you interested in Japan and it’s culture early in your life? Or was it something you started dedicating more time to in recent years?
Also, was there any sort of tutoring/classes involved? Or did you learn/study the language/culture on your own?
Thank You!
-John
Regarding xbox 360 controllers with proper dpads, you want to look at the new “silver” pad and the gears of war 3 pad which both have the new, rotating dpad, also the soon to arrive modern warfare 3 pad has the new design.
Hi 8-4 members,
has anyone made 8-foreplays joke yet ?
Zelda Symphony щ(゚ロ゚щ) SO JEALOUS.
Great episode, very informative for people like me who practically live under a (gaming) rock for now, and I do appreciate the Listener Feedback section. Thanks as usual!
So, who is who in the picture?
Hi 8-4! I really need your advice. :’(
I live in Canada, and ever since I saw the E3 trailer back in 2003 I’ve loved Monster Hunter.
Unfortunately, ever since they shut down the servers in 2007 I’ve yet to find a reasonable alternative to playing Monster Hunter online.
I have tried playing Monster Hunter Freedom, Freedom 2 and Unite on the PSP over Xlink-Kai, as well as ad-hoc party over the PS3. I even bought composite, s-video and component cables for the TV. But It’s never been quite the same, as it was, playing it on the Playstation 2.
The wait for Monster Hunter to finally arrive on the PS3 has been very disheartening as it’s the only system I currently own.
With Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD already out for the PS3 in Japan, should I continue to wait for a North American release?
A question for next show: Do you guys know Yu Darvish, and if so, could you please tell him to sign with the Yankees? Thank you
